A Book as a Bridge from Manhattan to Staten Island

Traveling on the Ferry boat “Spirit of America” from Manhattan to Staten Island, on May 6th 2016, with a sewing machine and an accordion book that when stretched would be about as long as the top deck of the boat, I stared sewing at departure and kept sewing while pushing my accordion book under the machine foot, drawing a line from the financial district to staten Island, covering more then five miles within the 58 feet of the book. The book was then folded. its size is 12 x 12 x 1.6″

Sewing by definition is a process meant to put together separate pieces of material, or to repair damaged artifacts. The idea of linking two places with sewing machine belongs to the conceptual core of the sewing. I see the Book As a Bridge Project as a tool for healing or “repairing tears” in different communities and I am looking forward to having the opportunity to use this very simple, inexpensive and portable book for the healing of conflicts or for building impossible bridges wherever needed
